Message from the Dean - April 15, 2024

Hello, CALS colleagues,

Last week was the annual Carl and Marjory Hertz Lecture on Emerging Issues in Agriculture, and we were treated to the executives of Hertz Farm Management, Inc. providing the remarks themselves. It was a great evening of thought-provoking comments and encouragement (watch the lecture recording if you couldn't attend). Hertz Farm Management is one of the leading companies of its kind if the U.S. It is worth looking at their website to learn the kinds of things a company like this does and to think about the broader sector they work in and all the opportunities it represents.

This week, we welcome the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dr. Benjamin Withers, former dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Colorado State University. Ben has already been engaged in the activities of LAS and its links to other colleges, such as CALS. We should all be looking forward to his leadership and the continued excellent partnership with LAS. We also recognize the most extraordinary work and partnership of Dean Beate Schmittmann over many years – and how the two colleges have grown and thrived together. On behalf of CALS, we extend our greatest appreciation to Beate and warmest welcome to Ben!

This week, Iowa State begins the interviews for our next Senior Vice President and Provost. It’s an exciting time to consider new leadership of the Division of Academic Affairs, and the key part of the entire Iowa State enterprise that is most important to our college. Provost Wickert has done outstanding work and positioned the Division for continued success.

Last week in CALS, we completed the three interviews for the next chair for EEOB, and next week we will start the interviews for our next Associate Dean for Global Engagement. Please participate in these searches as best you can and weigh in with your thinking on the candidates.

Have a great spring week! - Dan

Scenes from CALS

We had great attendance last Tuesday evening for the annual Hertz Lecture in Dolezal Auditorium. It was great to hear from members of the Hertz Farm Management leadership team: Chad Hertz, COO, Randy Hertz, CEO, Jeff Troendle, president of Hertz Farm Management, and Doug Hensley, president of Hertz Real Estate Services.

Kynzi Cole, senior in animal science, and other ISU Creamery employees are ready to serve great ice cream at the ISU Creamery in the Food Sciences Building most days and times during this terrific ice cream enjoying weather! Find the hours of operation and a list of ice cream flavors available on the ISU Creamery website.

It's no secret that George Washington Carver is one of our most revered alums, and many of you know there is a special display in the Dean's Gallery in Curtiss Hall about GWC. But you might not know there is an incredible portrait of GWC, and more, inside the Wallace Road entrance to the Food Sciences Building. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you've stopped in to grab an ice cream from the ISU Creamery just one floor up.

Simply, ahhhhh spring and the happy faces of Narcissus (strange story, beautiful flowers more commonly known as daffodils)!
