Message from the Dean - April 3, 2023

Hello, CALS,

I hope this finds you in good spirits this Monday. A short note today of further encouragement as we move toward the end of the semester and the adventure of summer for each of us.

Please make an extra effort to reach out to your students, and other students you may see and interact with, and ask them – “How’s it going? No, really, how’s it going?” Our students often start the conclusion of each phase of their educational journey, and start of the next chapter of it, or their next professional move, with uncertainty and sometimes stress. A reach out, an empathic ear, a smile, and your encouragement can make all the difference.

We’ve all been there at one time or another. Let’s each chip in and help launch our students with the inner and community confidence they deserve. Your voice in that will matter.

Also extend this friendliness to high school and transfer students, as well as their guests, who will be visiting campus later this month as part of Admitted Student Day (April 7), the Iowa FFA Leadership Conference (April 16-18) and the Iowa Youth Institute (April 24). Welcome them with a smile and ask if they need help navigating campus. When in doubt, direct them to the CALS Student Services office in 0004 Curtiss Hall for assistance.

This Thursday, April 6, the CALS Study Abroad Office will host the Spring 2023 Study Abroad Fair from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Harl Commons of Curtiss Hall. Program directors will be available to share new and exciting domestic and international travel opportunities being offered this coming fall and winter. Please encourage your students to attend!

My best for a good week, and please let me know what you’re thinking. - Dan

Have you seen the large poster display in Harl Commons about the Strategic Planning process underway for CALS? This process consists of our Strategic Statement of Purpose, or list of Strategic Priorities, and the upcoming development of unit-level Strategic Initiatives! Associate Dean Carolyn Lawrence-Dill is organizing these activities. Please check out the poster and the Strategic Planning website for further details.

We're starting to see signs of an Iowa spring! Flowers are pushing up through the ground, looking for sun and warmth, though they were met last Friday afternoon by a remarkable flurry of hail.
