Message from the Dean - August 22, 2022

Hello, CALS,

Happy first day of the new semester! It is truly wonderful to see our beautiful campus full of students to-and-fro bringing to life every corner of who we are and what we do! Enjoy all the moments of this Day 1, and the incredible weather we happen to have! Take a walk in the hallway and on the sidewalks around your buildings today and this week. Look for students looking a bit lost and lend a smile and some guidance as best you can. Help them know they are part of this community, and that they truly belong here. That’s most important, perhaps of all!

Some great pics today from the Iowa State Fair last week, and the welcoming skies on campus this weekend. Enjoy.

My best - Dan

Scenes from CALS

Below are several images from my visit to the Iowa State Fair last week:

Alison Parker and I stopped by the "I Milked a Cow" exhibit, hosted by the Dairy Science Club, and visited with club member Hannah Foster, an animal science and French language student. Pictured in the background is Little Ditty the cow.

The Iowa State exhibit inside the Varied Industries Building was a popular stop for fair-goers. This year, the exhibit featured the Ames National Laboratory, celebrating its 75th anniversary. (Last year, you may recall, Iowa State's booth at the fair featured George Washington Carver. Sukup Atrium is now home for the Lego statue of him that was created during last year's fair!)

I stopped for a photo with Kayla Lyon, director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, inside the DNR's building at the fair.

The Iowa Egg Council was busy handing out eggs-on-a-stick to fair-goers.

I stopped by the Iowa Pork Producers Association booth, another of Iowa's commodity groups.

At the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa Farm Bureau Foundation Century Farm awards ceremony, the Berghoefer Farm in Franklin County was one of honorees. The farm is owned by Del ('69 farm operation) and Linda Berghoefer and family. The family also includes granddaughter Emma Mostek, sophomore in animal science, who was not present for the award ceremony due to her participating in ISU Marching Band practice. They are pictured with IDALS Secretary Mike Naig (far left) and IFBF President Brent Johnson (far right).

Finally, last Saturday's rainstorm resulted in this rainbow, as seen over campus from the Student Innovation Center.
