Message from the Dean - August 26, 2024

Hello, CALS,

Here we go – fall semester ‘24! Please recall and put to use the various messages you’ve received about course protocols and policies from the university, and how to help your students take advantage of the department, college and university support structures designed for them. Most importantly – thank you for the support you give students in your own classrooms and labs! Our students are our purpose and the context in which we do all of our other work. They are our community, our social license, and our greatest source of pride. Thank you for however you support them, directly or indirectly; it all matters.

This week is also the Farm Progress Show, just a few miles west in Boone. It’s an extraordinary gathering of farmers, industry and organizations devoted to farming in all of its dimensions – from soil health to supply chains. About 150,000 people will attend from across the U.S. and around the world, and while it’s not an Iowa State event, it is a great venue to show off Iowa State and especially our college! The CALS and Extension display will be terrific – go visit!

Several exciting events are coming up - check the CALS Events webpage for more event listings as we go through the year:

  • CALS faculty and staff ice cream social, Aug. 30, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., east patio of Curtiss Hall
  • Faculty meeting with President Wintersteen and Senior Vice President and Provost Jason Keith, Sept. 3, 10-11 a.m., 1352 Gilman Hall
  • New Student BBQ, Sept. 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Iowa Farm Bureau Pavilion, Kildee Hall

Have a terrific week, and let me know what you’re thinking! Best - Dan
