Message from the Dean - December 8, 2025

Hello, CALS,

Welcome to Prep Week for our students and instructors, and next week finals, CALS Convocation and ISU Commencement! As usual, the semester has flown by, and I hope it has been a great one for you and your students.

Last week we celebrated a number of excellent activities, including the CALS Student Council end-of-year banquet and recognition event, the Deal Lecture given by Gretta Irwin, executive director and home economist with the Iowa Turkey Federation, the event celebrating President Wintersteen’s service to Iowa State, and much more. This week is equally busy with the:

  • CALS Pathways to Innovation and Leadership Showcase - Tuesday, Dec. 9, from 4-6 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Student Innovation Center\
  • Science with Practice poster session - Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 2-4 p.m. in the Kildee Hall atrium
  • CALS Holiday Party - Thursday, Dec. 11, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Sukup Atrium

Reflecting on the weather – I always feel like if it's going to be cold, we might as well have beautiful snow to enjoy, and we do! The lovely Iowa landscape looks like it's been put to bed for the winter, covered in a beautiful, soft blanket of snow. But we also know that beneath the snow in the soil, in the trees, and the woody shrubs around us, and the wildlife that still moves about – there is more than a bit of active life all around, getting through the winter to enable the bloom of spring!

Be safe out there, and have a great week!  - Dan

From the fourth floor of the Sukup-Elings building, this view of the terrific “Floating World” mobile that adorns the Sukup Atrium is worth the walk or elevator ride to the top to see! Later this week we'll have our annual CALS Holiday Party under it!

It was a wonderful event, with a packed house, and featured remarks by Wendy, her husband, Robert Waggoner, CALS Professor Emeritus Gail Nonnecke, CALS alum Julia Campbell Looney, and Vice President for Economic Development and Industry Relations and interim president designate David Spalding.
