Good morning, CALS colleagues,
I hope you had a great weekend and enjoyed some of the milder temps we finally had after some brutal cold just a few days ago. Ah, winter...and spring is on the way!
Last week was a flurry of activity, including Wednesday evening's fantastic celebration in the Memorial Union for George Washington Carver Day! Check out the CALS webpage about this event, which includes some really great background links to information, history and facts about Carver, and a link to watch the livestream recording of the actual event. If you click on that livestream link and advance to 1:07:20, you can view a movie about Carver, and at 1:36:26 you can start to view the actual celebration event. It was a full house in the Memorial Union and terrific energy all evening!
Also, last week on Thursday evening in the Memorial Union was a packed-house fantastic presentation by Dr. Temple Grandin of Colorado State University – the renowned animal behaviorist and advocate for the capabilities of autistic people, and an inspiration to us all. There is so much to know about her and her work. Check out her website and consider taking in the “Temple Grandin” movie. You’ll be moved and inspired for sure.
Last week we also had the interview of Kendall Lamkey for the position of CALS Associate Dean for Facilities and Operations, and beginning this week we’ll have a series of interviews for the next Wallace Chair in Sustainable Agriculture. Please consider attending and submitting your input on these important searchers (and so many other searches happening now in the college departments). And this week on Friday evening is the annual ISU Alumni Association Cardinal & Gold Gala!
Have a great week, and please don’t hesitate to let me know what you’re thinking. CALS community! CALS Advantage! - Dan

Enjoy these images, captured by university photographer Chris Gannon, of the Feb. 1 George Washington Carver Day celebration in the Memorial Union's Great Hall. Among the event's lineup were readings done by several CALS students, including Danielle Douglas, senior in animal science, of Carver's work. CALS alumnus Dewayne Goldmon ('91 PhD agronomy) gave the keynote speech.
