Hello, CALS,
This week, I am off to Florida to visit with key donors and partners to the college, along with the CALS Development team of Sarah Roelfs, Nick Van Berkum and Gelin Gil. It is an annual event that includes days filled with individual and small group visits and then a big evening event for all of Iowa State’s friends in the region (lots of snowbirds and plenty of year-rounders, too) led by President Wintersteen and ISU Foundation President and CEO Larissa Holtmyer Jones.
Among the various meetings, I’ll have time to interact with people that many of you know - the Freverts, Kolschowskys, Bettis, Hennings, Bowdens, Vasco, Shoultz, Latham, and the Robes. These terrific people have supported the college in so many generous ways and continue to do so. More than that, I always learn from my conversations with these fine folks, who are all deeply engaged in thinking about the subjects our college covers and how we can further pursue them and do great things for the next generations of students that come our way.
As I did last week, I want to again thank and recognize everyone on our field crews who have been out there in the cold taking care of our many enterprises! It really matters.
Last Friday afternoon, we had the opportunity to award three animal science faculty, all at once, with medallions to celebrate the named professorships they have assumed. It was the first time we did three at once, and it was great fun. Previously, I had helped award two at once, a year or so ago, for the Brent Hart professorships awarded to Matt Helmers and Mike Castellano. During last Friday's ceremony, we awarded the Morrison Chair in Meat Science and medallion to Jim Dickson, the Jay L. Lush Chair in Animal Breeding and Genetics and medallion to Juan Steibel, and the Dr. John Patience Professorship in Applied Animal Nutrition and medallion to Nick Gabler. All of these people are so deserving, and the positions are named for and endowed by remarkable people.
Best for a great and warmer week. - Dan
