Message from the Dean - January 23, 2023

Happy Monday, CALS,

Last week the semester really got rolling, and now it's full speed ahead. There’s so much going on.

It was a pleasure last week to attend the Cardinal Women* Commencement. ABE’s Teresa Middleton, FSHN’s Deanna Powell and Agronomy’s Nicole Scott were recognized for their participation, and FSHN’s Sarah Conova was recognized for providing leadership for one of the groups this past year. Congrats to all! And this week (tomorrow), there is an event to recognize the 12 Iowa State women who will be honored for their work by being included in the Women Impacting ISU calendar – congratulations to FSHN’s Shannon Coleman and Stephanie Clark, and Agronomy’s Arti Singh!

This week and part of next, I am travelling for ISU Foundation events and to visit with key alumni and donors to the college. I’ll have the great opportunity to meet with people like the Kolschowskys, who have supported many scholarships and college projects and are the principle movers behind our Uganda Program, and the Robeses, who have supported many scholarships, programs and are the principal movers behind our program in St John U.S. Virgin Islands. I'll also meet with Jim and Marcia Borel, Bob Vasko, Lynn Schoultz, Lloyd and Kathryn Bettis, Del and Mary Bowden, Jim and Clare Frevert, Jeff Henning, and many more!

It's truly amazing to think of the devotion and confidence people like these, and so many others, have in our college and the work YOU do. Consider this, as I presented at the CALS Town Hall last fall: last year our alumni, partners and friends donated $60 million (yes, that’s correct) to the college, and while that was an extraordinary year, we have an annual (yes, annual) donation goal of $30 million. Some of those funds are in cash to be used on specific projects in the near-term, and many of those dollars are in endowment, estate and planned giving provisions, but they all represent a commitment to the college that is truly outstanding.

My very best, and keep me posted on your happenings and your ideas. - Dan
