Message from the Dean - July 14, 2025

Hello, CALS,

Happy Monday. Another beautiful day. It feels awkward, of late, to celebrate our weather when the devastation of the July 4th flooding in Texas is still very much in front of us. Amazing to think of how far we’ve come with understanding and forecasting weather, and yet still how vulnerable we are. It always amazes me to contemplate that we feed the world, the most fundamental thing there is, with the following “hope” as strategy – and we all know that “hope” is not a strategy - we hope it rains, we hope it doesn’t rain too much or too little, we hope it rains when we need it, etc, etc.

My best for a great week. - Dan

Scenes from CALS

A series of pictures from last Friday touring local farms with Senior Vice President and Provost Jason Keith and Senior Vice President Sean Reeder, along with Kendall Lamkey and Jason Ross. Stops included the Iowa State University Kent Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex, hosted by Dirk Maier and Camille Schroeder; the Iowa State Dairy Farm, hosted by Rusty Burgett and Warren Brooks; the BioCentury Research Farm, hosted by Rob Hartmann; and the ISU Horticulture Research Station, hosted by Chloe Henscheid.
