Message from the Dean - July 19, 2021

Hello CALS Colleagues,

We’re just five weeks from the start of classes! Lots of folks are returning from or heading out to well-deserved vacations. I hope each of you find time and space to enjoy the summer and some excellent rest and relaxation - from stay-cations in the garden, to Rocky Mountain hikes, to lakes and oceans and family get-togethers. Enjoy it all. Our students will return to us energized and happy to be on campus and out from the shadow of COVID-19. Although, as we read in the news, the shadow of COVID-19 still very much lurks – so please remain diligent.

As we think about our returning and incoming students, let’s remind ourselves that last year’s freshmen never really had an on-campus experience, and this year’s freshmen never really had a normal finish to high school. They’ll need some extra attention and care, and CALS is surely the place for that!

Wishing you a great week. Always open to know what you’re thinking – send me a note. And please send in your most interesting pictures for inclusion in this weekly email. My best - Dan

Nature in focus

Shelley Taylor, director of global programs, submitted this photo of a juvenile bald eagle perched on a post in her yard one morning. The juvenile is from a nearby nest where two eaglets were raised this spring.

I encourage you all to take a drive south of Ames on State Avenue/520th Avenue, where you'll see construction progress taking place on the Kent Corporation Feed Mill and Grain Science Complex (southwest corner of the State Avenue and Highway 30 intersection) and the new Turkey Teaching and Research Facility (north of the Robert T. Hamilton Poultry Teaching and Research Facility on 520th Avenue).

Finally, beautiful hydrangeas are in full bloom this time of year.

Please keep sharing your photos with me via email!
