Message from the Dean - June 2, 2025

Hello CALS,

Really feels like summer now - enjoy and be careful out there. Today marks the first day of June's orientation season, during which fall 2025 incoming students and their families will be on campus throughout the month. Please offer these visitors a welcoming smile and help navigating campus, as needed.

Recently, I've had a number of excellent discussions with the leadership of various stakeholder groups of our college about the work we do on behalf of the state and its people, communities and industries. It's invigorating to hear how much they value our work, and that they always look forward to our efforts and impact. That's all about what you each do. Thank you!

These discussions come on the heels of the conclusion of the state's Legislative Session and support of our university, Agriculture Experiment Station, Extension and more. Iowa's support is strong. At the same time, we watch with concern the emerging federal considerations of the Agriculture Experiment Stations and Extension programs all across the country. Hang on tight, keep resilient and optimistic, and stay focused on our core missions of service and access through teaching, research and extension and outreach.

Last week was short, having celebrated Memorial Day. It’s an especially important day on the calendar, far more than picnics, vacations and shopping sales. Those are expressions of freedom. It's so important to also never forget the call to duty that led to the ultimate sacrifice that many have made to keep our nation and its freedoms secure. Remind yourself of John McRae’s poem, "In Flanders Fields," and the poetic reply to it by Moina Michael in "We Shall Keep the Faith."

Below are some pictures to enjoy, including of our spring 2025 CALS Convocation.

Best for a great week. - Dan

Gelin Gil from our CALS Development office and I had a terrific conversation last week with 1950(!) forestry alum Gene Hertel (upper left), who just turned 100 years young, his son, Dan, a 1979 forestry alum, Dan's wife, Karen (lower right), and Gene's daughter, Jane Meyers, a 1965 biology alum (upper right). Gelin has been working with Dan to establish a forestry scholarship to celebrate Gene's 100th birthday! A totally great conversation, and this spring, we'll award Gene the Dean's Award for Sustained Excellence!
