Greetings, CALS colleagues,
In this week’s CALS Online newsletter, you’ll find a list of fellow faculty and staff who will be recognized at next week’s CALS Spring Awards Program for their exceptional achievements in the areas of teaching, advising, research and extension. Let’s pack Dolezal Auditorium (127 Curtiss Hall) next Wednesday, March 27, at 4:10 p.m. to celebrate these outstanding individuals! Be sure to stick around afterward for a wine and cheese reception in Harl Commons.
During the program, we’ll also present a posthumous award to a CALS alum who made significant contributions to international agriculture during his lifetime. Also, those who were named to endowed professorships, hit 25+ year employment milestones at Iowa State or retired during the past year will be recognized. I hope to see you all next Wednesday afternoon!
In other news, last week I was in Cresco, Iowa, to visit and tour the Plant Peddler with owner/operator and 1980 horticulture alum Mike Gooder (and member of the Department of Horticulture advisory group). I also met his team, including his son, John Gooder ('14 horticulture), who is the company COO, and Deb Zelle ('12 horticulture), Patrick Youds ('22 horticulture), Jesse Vorwald ('16 community and regional planning), and Jason Sbiral ('97 forestry) – see pictures below. A great visit with an extraordinary (and award winning) company, one of the nation’s largest supplier of poinsettias and so many more plants, and user of the highest technology in greenhouse production and logistics.
All the best as we navigate the last half of the spring semester. – Dan
Scenes from CALS
While in Cresco, Iowa, visiting/touring Plant Peddler, I stopped to grab this photo of a downtown mural honoring Norman Borlaug. This is just one of the town's many tributes to the World Food Prize founder.
