Message from the Dean - May 20, 2024

Good morning, CALS,

A short note today to wish you a great week.

For those farmers (including our own) that have their crops planted, the rain we just had is terrific unless there are low spots that flood out the plants or catch a spot of heavy rain on a slope that washes out the new seed/seedlings. For those still trying to finish planting, the rain will make it much harder to get into the field, and to give their crop the days needed to best produce as the weather continues to do its thing through the growing season.

Yesterday evening, I saw a farmer with a big planting rig stuck in a wet spot, even as the evening’s rainfall approached (see pic below). There is also the intersection of weather with diseases, insects, weeds and more. Such is the nature of farming.

We have to give our farmers props for all they do and the natural world they do it in.

My best, and always look forward to hearing from you. - Dan

Great streambank stabilization, and beautiful!
