Message from the Dean - November 7, 2022

Happy Monday, CALS!

I hope this finds you all well and you had a great weekend. Cyclone football sure did!

Last week, we had the college and alumni association awards activities, including a dinner in Harl Commons for CALS awardees and their families, and then Friday afternoon, the formal ceremony in Stephens Auditorium. We recognized these great folks: Bill Northey, Robert Rust, Amanda De Jong, Martin Gross, Chris Nelson and Mick Guttau. Read more about them in this news release. Each year it's amazing the people we get to recognize. If you know these people, perhaps send them a congratulatory note.

We also earlier in the week had the opening event for the Food Insecurity Challenge. We now have 30 teams of at least three students each (including many CALS students) brainstorming and preparing to compete in the Student Innovation Center next week on innovative ideas to further enable and enhance how food is made more accessible to those in need. This is a joint effort of CALS (special thanks to Carmen Bain, Kevin Kimle and company), the Ivy College of Business and the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship (special thanks to Judi Eyles and company). Great buzz in the room with more than 130 students following a "Hunger Banquet" with them.

Have a great week everyone!  - Dan

Beautiful fall, white pines, black pines and Norway spruce as a backdrop to the deciduous conifer larch (the native version also called tamarack) on central campus.

An unusual visitor was hanging out outside Curtiss Hall last Monday. He requested he be referred to simply as "ISU Spidey."

Bit of trivia for you today regarding the final photo - Who knows what these are or were for around the main flagpole on central campus?
