Message from the Dean - October 14, 2024

Hello, CALS,

I hope you had a great weekend and are enjoying the most certain arrival of fall! The leaves are falling like the snow we’ll soon see, and the frost this week will declare the remnants of summer over. I think it’s a spectacular time of year.

Check out this interesting website for a collection of fall poetry.

Last week, we enjoyed the CALS Career Day (see pics below) and the Deal Lecture, featuring the stories of conservationists Wangari Maathai, Billy Frank, Jr., and Ding Darling. If you don’t know about these inspiring people – spend a few minutes and look them up!

This week, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, join me for a CALS Chat from 7:30-9 a.m. in Curtiss Hall's Harl Commons. This is a casual, drop-in event for all faculty and staff. Come and thank our advisors for their efforts with the transition to Workday student, chat with your colleagues, and talk about what’s on your mind.

Then next week, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, we'll have the CALS Town Hall in 2432 Food Sciences Building starting at 12:15 p.m.

My best - Dan

Lied Recreation Athletic Center was buzzing with the excitement and opportunity of the great CALS Career Day last week! More than 250 companies were in attendance to hire CALS students for internships and jobs.
Statues of four maidens surrounding a fountain in a shallow pool.
The Fountain of the Four Seasons outside the Memorial Union has been newly restored and is looking beautiful, especially as it sparkles on these crisp autumn days. If it's been awhile since you stopped and gazed at it – please do! Recall as well that the models Christian Petersen used to craft the four maidens are located in the ground floor rotunda in Curtiss Hall. All very special.

Brick public art outside the ISU Foundation offices off of University Avenue behind the Gateway Hotel. Check it out - the images are all agricultural. It's a beautiful piece seldom seen.
