Message from the Dean - October 28, 2024

Hello CALS, and happy Monday,

This is one of the big weeks for agriculture in Iowa, notwithstanding that every day, every year, it’s important. This is World Food Prize (WFP) week, and all around the globe people turn their interest to Iowa. Part of the tradition of this week, each year, is an advanced version of the Laureate presentations right here at Iowa State. Today, Monday, Oct. 28, at 5:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Great Hall, we will be honored and inspired by the 2024 Norman Borlaug Lecture, presented by this year's recipients of the prize, Cary Fowler and Geoffrey Hawtin. Read about their incredible work and Fowler’s Iowa connection!

Immediately prior to the Borlaug lecture, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room/South Ballroom, students will present posters about projects they've done related to world issues. Twenty students will be presenting this year, and many of them are from CALS.

We’ll have a terrific contingent of CALS faculty, staff and students attending the Borlaug Dialogue at the WFP meetings throughout the week, including on Tuesday evening a special “side event” celebration of the 20th anniversary of our CSRL Program in Uganda.

Last week, we had the annual fall CALS Town Hall with Kendall Lamkey and me presenting. By this time next week, we’ll have a video of that posted for you to view if you missed the meeting. It was great to see such a terrific turnout – and many thanks to all who were able to attend! And to all those who immediately afterward patronized the ISU Creamery!

Please don’t forget to nominate your CALS colleagues, faculty and staff for the annual college awards – due Nov. 19.

Watch for updates very soon on the timing of the interviews and seminar presentations of our three candidates for the next Associate Dean for Research and Discovery. This is a key position in the college on behalf of us all – and your participation and input will be so helpful.

Next week, on Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room is the Beal Lecture in Rural Sociology, and on Nov. 6, we have the launch of this year's Food Insecurity Challenge, from 5-8 p.m. in the Memorial Union Sun Room and Great Hall. Please come out for these, too. And encourage your students with an artistic flair (or interest; no flair necessarily required) to sign up for the Crosspollinating Art & Science Competition (reach out to Dior Kelley or Sarah Wehner for more information).

Have a terrific week. My best - Dan
