Hello, CALS,
We’re five weeks into the semester, and I hope it’s going very well for all of you. This week is CALS Week - please check out the many activities your students have planned – and participate! In addition to the CALS Week activities, the ISU Local Food Festival will take place Wednesday, Sept. 24, from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on central campus. The event features Iowa State departments and student organizations, local farm and food businesses, and community organizations.
This week is also ISU Foundation Governor’s Week. The Foundation events are built around having lots of our key donors and college friends in town to hear about the latest and greatest happenings at Iowa State and how their generosity is being put to work. This year, it will also, no doubt, be a celebration with these wonderful supporters of President Wintersteen’s extraordinary service! Among the many Foundation events focused on our college will be activities related to one of our satellite campuses, the Iowa State University - Uganda Program, and the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods.
Last week (see pictures below), I had a quick trip to another of our satellite campuses, the Rod & Connie French Conservation Education Camp (aka Montana Camp) in Montana, to see students and meet with donors to that program and other parts of the college. It was a great trip and well worth the time and effort.
Over the last few weeks, I have presented to a number of Iowa agriculture organizations on what is now the Board of Regents-approved request from Iowa State for state legislative support in the next annual budget cycle. This will include a unique request for additional support for the Agriculture Experiment Station, Extension, and the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. It is, like last year, another excellent opportunity for the work we do in CALS.
Last week, we also had a visit from our colleagues at Kirkwood Community College to see our Alliant Energy Solar Farm at Iowa State University. Always something going on here!
My best for a great week! - Dan
