Message from the Dean - September 29, 2025

Hello, CALS,

The Cyclones are 5-0, and that’s great for us all! ISU Athletics is a core part of our university. Success on the playing field is another measure of our university and student performance. Even if you’re not an avid football fan or watcher, enjoy the success of your Iowa State team. Just as last week we enjoyed celebrating the University Faculty and Staff Awards, including more than 20 awardees from our college!

Last week, we also recognized the alums and partners who give to the university at the annual fall ISU Foundation Governor’s Week. Here in the college, we had a number of special events, including a team and donor review of the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods program, and the same for Global Resource Systems. We also hosted an evening reception for key donors and celebrated the unveiling of a new mural on the second floor of Curtiss Hall that recognizes the past/present/future of the Ag 450 Farm!

The Ag 450 mural was funded by a generous gift from Dale Weber (’52 farm operation, ’70 MS animal science, ’74 PhD) - see pic below - a devotee of this special student-run learning and doing farm. At the event celebrating the unveiling, we were thrilled to have with us not only Dr. Weber and family, but also the family of two other CALS icons – William (Bill) Murray and Louis Thompson. It was a grand event with more than 50 people attending, including students, faculty, staff, alums and donors.

This week, on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 3, we’ll have the medallion ceremony for the inaugural Rothschild Endowed Professor in Global Food Security and Animal Science, presented to Maria Wurzinger, professor of animal science, at 3:30 p.m. in the Ensminger Room, 1204 Kildee Hall. Please come out and join us for that recognition.

My best for a great week. Please let me know what you’re thinking. - Dan

We had great attendance at the fun ceremony this past Friday to dedicate the mural recently installed on the second floor of Curtiss Hall honoring the past/present/future of the Ag450 Farm. The display was funded by a gift from Dale Weber (’52 farm operation, ’70 MS animal science, ’74 PhD), second from left, who was in the 1952 Ag 450 class and spent the largest share of his career as a professor of animal nutrition at Oregon State University.
